Bangor joins contingent of municipalities banning retail marijuana

With a unanimous vote, Bangor’s City Council approved a six-month ban on all recreational-use marijuana retail establishments and cultivation in the city if Maine voters approve Question 1 on Election Day.

Council Chairman Sean Faircloth told the Bangor Daily News that the moratorium, which will not apply to medical marijuana facilities, is meant to give the city time to figure out how it wants to move ahead with the new law if it’s passed.

Councilor Joe Baldacci echoed a similar sentiment to the BDN. “If it is going to happen, let it happen in an orderly and regulated manner,” Baldacci told the BDN. “Obviously, we want to protect minors and young families.”

Moratoriums on recreational marijuana faculties are gaining traction in the state ahead of the vote, with Brewer, Gray and Westbrook instituting similar six-month bans, according to the BDN. Officials in both New Gloucester and Cumberland also will soon be making decisions on moratoriums, the BDN reported.
