More Mainers on insurance marketplace

Despite political controversy around the Affordable Care Act, increasing numbers of Mainers continue to enroll in the ACA’s marketplace insurance plans.

Maine Public reported that more than 56,000 Mainers enrolled in ACA marketplace insurance plans for next year — about 5,000 more enrollments compared to the same time last year.

Emily Brostek of Consumers for Affordable Health Care told Maine Public that despite the uncertainties about the ACA’s long-term future, the coverage people signed up for will extend through 2017.

“Insurers have emphasized that the coverage people buy today is a contract for 2017 — a contract that they will continue to honor,” she said.

According to a Dec. 13 news release from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nationwide, more than 20 million people have coverage through the ACA marketplace.
