Long-time restaurateur and billionaire purchase island restaurant

Michael Boland, the long-time owner of restaurants in Bar Harbor, has joined with billionaire Mitchell Rales, a part-time resident of Northeast Harbor, to purchase a popular seasonal restaurant on Little Cranberry Island.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Boland and Rales plan to keep the Islesford Dock Restaurant largely the same.

Boland has been involved in a number of restaurants, past and present, over the years, including some in Bangor, Portland and Hancock. His current eateries include Havana and Choco-Latte in Bar Harbor.

The Islesford Dock Restaurant has been running since 1993, according to its website. The purchase comes upon the retirement of previous owners Cynthia and Dan Lief.

“We plan to provide good jobs to local residents and purchase as much as possible from local or Maine-based vendors, which will help us achieve our goal of serving our customers great food and beverages in a unique setting,” Boland told the BDN.

“We certainly hope to run as great a restaurant as Dan and Cynthia did for the last 24 years. However, we are equally excited about the economic impact of keeping this icon going and increasing its economic impact through various means, including lengthening the season,” Rales added.
