Gardiner businesses consider impact of infrastructure work

The City of Gardiner is deep into infrastructure improvements, such as implementation of façade improvement grants, reconstruction of downtown Water Street and the expected redevelopment of five downtown buildings.

Now the city is preparing for major bridge reconstruction and the city is tackling issues related to impact on businesses, residents and commuters, the Kennebec Journal reported.

The replacement of two bridges is expected to get underway in 2018.

At a recent meeting of Gardiner’s Bridge Advisory Committee, the focus was on maintaining traffic flows through downtown Gardiner and the region during construction. Committee members expressed concern that detours residents might take to avoid construction might put pressure on neighborhood streets not intended to handle heavy traffic, and that drivers might avoid Gardiner, affecting business, the Kennebec Journal reported. A survey was sent to about 90 downtown businesses to get input.
