Colby College art museum receives $100 million gift
Peter and Paula Lunder, philanthropists with long ties to Colby College, have made another $100 million gift to the college’s museum of art.
The Waterville Sentinel reported that the Lunders’ gift includes about 1,500 works of art and will fund the creation of the Lunder Institute of American Art at the college’s campus.
The gift was announced Thursday night at a meeting of the college’s trustees in Boston, the newspaper reported.
In 2007, the Lunders donated to the museum hundreds of works of art valued at more than $100 million. Six years later, the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion opened to display the works. When the 26,000-square-foot addition was completed, Colby's art museum became the largest in Maine, with the Lunder collection featuring works by James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe, among others.
