Jean Hoffman joins MedRhythms' board of directors

Sean Alonzo Harris Jean Hoffman, founder and former president and CEO of Putney Inc., has invested in digital medicine startup MedRhythms and joined its board of directors.

Jean Hoffman, founder and former president and CEO of the Portland-based veterinary product company Putney Inc., has invested in and joined the board of directors of MedRhythms, a digital medicine startup that combines sensors, neuroscience and music to help people recover from neurologic injury or disease.

Hoffman, recognized by Mainebiz as a 2009 Woman to Watch and a Business Leader of the Year in 2012, led Putney from its inception in 2006 to a $200 million exit in April 2016.  Prior to Putney, Hoffman founded and built Newport Strategies Inc., a proprietary health care information technology company that was acquired by Thomson Reuters (NYSE-TRI) in 2004.

Brian Harris, CEO of MedRhythms, said in a release he’s eager to leverage Hoffman’s expertise as the startup develops its first product and go-to-market strategy.

“Jean’s strategic vision and proven track record in building successful businesses are critical assets to MedRhythms’ growth,” he said. “Our goal is to be the leader in digital medicine and rehabilitation.”

MedRhythms was founded in 2015. Its pioneer product is a medical device that uses sensors to collect patient performance data in order to individualize music therapy treatment. The company uses a team of neurologic music therapists to treat patients, but sees its medical device as the best way to improve rehabilitation delivery by personalizing treatment.

Hoffman said she is impressed by the MedRhythms’ team.

“I have been working with Brian and Owen for a few months and am impressed that both are ‘A’ players who have the vision and ability to execute and overcome the many challenges that any early stage healthcare company faces,” she said. “As founders, they’ve identified a market need, developed and filed a provisional patent for their first product, and laid out a thoughtful business foundation. Based on my own experience as an entrepreneur, I’m confident in the concept for MedRhythms and in Brian and Owen’s ability to lead the company to achieve that growth potential.”
