Proposed federal budget could eliminate Maine Sea Grant jobs

Maine Sea Grant, a program based at the University of Maine in Orono that has about 18 employees, including administrative, support and extension personnel, faces an almost 67% reduction in its budget under President Donald Trump’s proposed budget cuts for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Ellsworth American reported those jobs could disappear with Trump’s proposed budget cuts for the NOAA, which provides $1.2 million of MSG’s $1.8 million budget.

“We’ve been zeroed out,” MSG director Paul Anderson said at last weekend’s Maine Fishermen’s Forum, the American reported.

Sea Grant supports coastal communities and enterprise through research and education, according to its website.

Anderson told the Ellsworth American he was working with other state Sea Grant directors and NOAA’s Office of Atmospheric Research to develop a strategy to maintain federal funding.
