Maine seeks federal help bridging trade gap on lobsters
With a trade deal between the European Union and Canada near completion, elected officials in Maine want the federal government to try to avert what they see as potential trade disadvantage in the export of lobster.
The Associated Press reported the Canada-European Union deal would get rid of tariffs on Canadian lobster exports to the 28-nation bloc. That would give Canada an advantage over the United States, some argue.
EU nations imported more than $150 million in lobster from the United States last year and $190 million Canadian ($143 million in U.S. dollars) from Canada. The combination of a strong U.S. dollar and tariffs would make it hard to compete with Canada if the EU eliminates tariffs on Canadian lobsters, American lobster exporters said.
