Payless closing four shoe stores in Maine

Payless ShoeSource is closing four Maine stores as part of a cost-cutting plan to close 400 underperforming stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Store locations for the Payless stores to be closed are: The Shops At Biddeford Crossing in Biddeford; Aroostook Centre in Presque Isle; Broadway Shopping Center in Bangor; and Maine Coast Mall in Ellsworth.

The closures were announced Tuesday after the Topeka, Kansas-based discount retailer was granted Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by Judge Kathy A. Surratt-States of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

The retail chain has more than 4,400 stores in 30 countries and describes itself as "the largest specialty family footwear retailer in the Western Hemisphere."
