Bailey Island fishing wharf to be auctioned

An important fishing wharf in Garrison’s Cove on Bailey Island in Harpswell is due to be auctioned on April 25 as part of a bankruptcy proceeding, with the property being listed as available for continued use or redevelopment.
The Bangor Daily News reported that redevelopment could impact fishing operations, as well as seasonal operation of the Casco Bay Ferry cruise boat and the adjacent Cook’s Lobster & Ale House.
About a dozen fishermen moor their boats in Garrison’s Cove and fish from the wharf. One fisherman, Danny Coffin, told the BDN that if the wharf were lost to fishermen, he and others would still moor in the cove but would have to travel elsewhere to buy bait and to sell their catch.
Coffin told the BDN the wharf needs repairs.
Nick and Jennifer Charboneau bought the 62-year-old Cook’s Lobster & Ale House at a related auction in 2015, when previous owner Norman C. Parent sought bankruptcy protection. Parent kept the wharf but it’s now being put on the block by Tranzon Auction Properties on behalf of the bankruptcy trustee. Nick Charboneau told the BDN he plans to bid on the wharf, and estimated it needs about $500,000 in renovations.
Harbormaster Jim Hayes told the BDN the wharf is zoned for a “marine-related business.”
