Attracting students the old-fashioned way — with food

On Aug. 18, the college is inviting prospective students and parents to the campus for a Maine-themed lunch that includes lobster rolls.

Thomas College will invite prospective students and families to campus on Aug. 18 for what it’s calling “Wicked Good TC Summer Visit.”

The Waterville college will offer a Maine-themed lunch with lobster rolls, potato salad, corn, whoopie pies and more.

“Join us for a summer visit to campus for fun lawn games, a tour of our beautiful campus, and a lunch with Maine’s best foods,” said Jonathan Kent, vice president of enrollment management. “Touring a college campus is a great way to find out if it’s the right fit for you — and why not enjoy yourself and a beautiful Maine summer while you’re at it?”

Colleges are becoming ever more aggressive about recruiting students and, with high school enrollment waning in Maine, out-of-state students are in particularly high demand.

Thomas College, which was founded in 1894, offers master’s, baccalaureate and associate degrees in programs ranging from criminal justice and psychology to teacher education, business and technology. It has 1,000 students. According to its website, 78% of its students are from Maine, 17% are from elsewhere in New England and 5% are from other states or countries.

The event will be Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., followed by a quick welcome, lunch, games and a campus tour.
