Brunswick Landing, BIW get good news on federal funding

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, had some good news Monday for two key segments of the Midcoast region’s economy, announcing that the U.S. Navy awarded $11.39 million to Bath Iron Works and the Federal Aviation Administration more than $2 million for Brunswick Executive Airport.

BIW’s funding for contract modifications will be used to exercise options for lead yard services for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The funding is a cost-plus-award-fee modification to a previously awarded contract for the continuation of lead yard services. Funding was allocated through the Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command.

Since 1987, Bath Iron Works has provided design and technical assistances services for the DDG-51-class destroyers.

Collins is a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and King is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Brunswick Executive Airport lands $2M

Collins, who also is chairwoman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, and King reported that the Brunswick Executive Airport will receive $2.01 million through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Military Airport Program to support improvements for Hanger 5.

“The redevelopment of Brunswick Naval Air Station has been a catalyst for new economic activity and job creation in the region, and the presence of the Brunswick Executive Airport is a strong asset for businesses in the area,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This funding will help support the outstanding work by the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, increase the airport’s functionality and further assist the conversion from military base to civilian airport.”

MAP funding is awarded to civil sponsors of military airfields for the development of aviation facilities for the public. This program also assists new sponsors in converting former military airfields to public use to add system capacity and reduce congestion at existing airports experiencing significant delays. In addition, MAP provides financial assistance to the civilian sponsors who convert military airfields to civilian or joint military/civilian use.
