DOT offers Bar Harbor ferry terminal for $3.5 million
In the latest phase of negotiations on the former ferry terminal in Bar Harbor, the Maine Department of Transportation has offered to sell it to the town of Bar Harbor for $3.5 million
The Mount Desert Islander reported the sale for that amount would allow the town to use the property free of any DOT restrictions. Another offer under consideration is a sale by DOT to the town for between $2 million and $2.5 million, which would come with a requirement to use the property for a long-term transportation use.
The property is under consideration for use as a cruise ship docking terminal.
The town is setting up an interest group to discuss the property’s use and terms.
Bar Harbor is Maine's busiest cruise port, with 163 ship visits due in 2017, up from 105 in 2016. The town is weighing the question of whether it can take more cruise ships, even with a second facility. Currently, cruise ships anchor off the town wharf and tender passengers to land.
"Congestion is an issue,” Town Manager Cornell Knight told Mainebiz in May.
