Maine native sentenced to four months over campaign donations
Developer Michael A. Liberty, 56, who grew up in Gray and now lives in Windermere, Fla., was sentenced to four months in prison for illegal political contributions.
According to a press release from the U.S. District Court, Liberty was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release for illegally making political contributions in the names of others to a presidential candidate’s primary campaign committee.
Liberty was also ordered to pay a $100,000 fine. Liberty pled guilty to the charge on Nov. 28, 2016. He was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Court by Judge D. Brock Hornby.
According to admissions made in connection with his guilty plea, between May and June 2011 Liberty made $22,500 in primary contributions through nine employees, associates and family members to the principal campaign committee of a candidate for president of the United States. In fact, Liberty paid for all of the contributions, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Liberty was at one time a prominent developer in Portland, including the 1987 development of the 195,000-square-foot office building 100 Middle St., which sold in 2015 for $35.3 million.
