New management plan drafted for St. John-Allagash region

Development issues on state lands that are part of the new St. John-Allagash Region Management Plan will be a topic of discussion among local residents at an Aug. 30 public meeting.

The Fiddlehead Focus reported that nearly 60,000 acres in combined public lands are being reviewed as part of the planning project.

Wallagrass resident Melford Pelletier, who serves on the state’s Allagash Wilderness Waterway Advisory Council, told the paper he was concerned about potential changes that could be implemented during creation of such a management plan.

“I wouldn’t want to see any development in that area,” he said.

The lands are currently managed for multiple uses, including as scenic and natural areas, for recreation, wildlife habitat and timber production. The planning process does not include the Allagash Wilderness Waterway itself, which is managed under its own 15-year plan adopted in 2012.
