Maine has a new energy czar: Steven McGrath

A former chief financial officer at Downeast Energy Corp. is the new director of the Governor’s Energy Office.

Steven McGrath brings broad experience in the energy industry to his new role, having been responsible for oil and propane supply and hedging during his stint as Downeast Energy’s CFO. For the past four years he's served as CEO of Greystone Advisors, a financial and management advisory company based in Cape Elizabeth. While at Greystone, he acted as a part-time CFO for a number of small businesses in Maine.

"Steve's experience in the energy industry will help us move Maine forward," Gov. Paul LePage said in a news release. "I am pleased he has joined my administration, and I look forward to his insight into this vital policy area."

McGrath replaces Patrick Woodcock, who resigned as director last November  and is now the assistant secretary of energy at Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

McGrath started his corporate career in New York City, where he worked for Bristol-Myers Company, now Bristol-Myers Squibb. He has also held senior financial management roles at Beiersdorf AG, Hyperion Software and Wright Express (now WEX).

A resident of Cape Elizabeth, McGrath's degrees include a master of business administration in finance from New York University, a master of arts in mathematics from the University of Maine and a bachelor of science from Bates College.

McGrath started his new role at the Governor's Energy Office on Aug. 25.
