Historic Houlton market to close

The owners of the 111-year-old Dow’s Market in Houlton have decided to close the store.

Thecounty.me reported that owners Reggie and Emily Dow have tried unsuccessfully to sell the store, one of Houlton’s longest-running businesses, for the past few years.

“Business has been healthy, so there is an opportunity for the right person to buy themselves a job and be successful,” she told the publication.

The business started as the High Street Grocery in 1906. The Dows took over after the store briefly closed in 2001, reopening it in January 2002. The couple still hope to sell the business, which regularly employs 14.
