Longtime Mount Desert Island hotelier dies

David Witham, the multimillionaire owner of nine Bar Harbor hotels, died of complications from Parkinson’s disease on Saturday. He was 77.

“He was a major player in the motel business on the island, and he is one of the folks responsible for developing it into what it is, and I mean that in a good way,” Bar Harbor Town Council Chairman Paul Paradis told the Bangor Daily News

In Bar Harbor, the decades-long rivalry between Witham and fellow millionaire Bar Harbor hotelier Tom Walsh was well-known. The BDN reported the rivalry ensued in the early years of the new millennium, when Walsh acquired and developed a central stretch of waterfront property. Both men added to their portfolios throughout the 2000s.

Witham’s holdings included his flagship Bar Harbor Inn. In 2010, he owned about 750 rooms with an assessed value of $34.5 million.
