Maine Community Foundation warns of telephone scam

Maine Community Foundation reported that a person using a fraudulent phone number identified by the nonprofit’s name has made calls in an attempt to solicit gifts from people in Maine.

According to the foundation’s news release, the caller thanked people for previous gifts and asked them to consider making a credit card gift or another type of gift. Maine Community Foundation stated that these calls are not legitimate and advised the public to hang up immediately.

It urged anyone with concerns about similar calls to contact the nonprofit at 1-877-700-6800.

Now in its 34th year, Maine Community Foundation has more than 1,700 funds and $480 million in assets. A statewide organization with offices in Ellsworth and Portland, it works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people.

In 2016, the foundation awarded more than $33.5 million in grants and scholarships, according to its website.
