Sea Dog Brewing goes green in Camden

The Sea Dog Brewing Co. in Camden has cut its use of plastic drinking straws by 30% and uses a program that turns food waste into biofuels in an effort to decrease its environmental footprint.

General Manager Robert Labbe, crediting employee Alysia Nilsen for the straw initiative, told the PenBay Pilot that the restaurant would not be able to eliminate all straws right away. But, the goal is “ultimately to eliminate it,” he said.

Reduction of food waste is accomplished through a program called Agri-cycle, which puts food waste in an anaerobic digestion system off-site, turns it into reusable biofuels, and also reduces the restaurant’s waste expenditure. The establishment has also eliminated the use of Styrofoam in favor of compostable paper for to-go items.

Sea Dog’s Bangor and Topsham locations also use Agri-cycle.
