Ice It! opens second location, at 502 Deering Commons

Ice It! Bakery and Cafe has opened in the new 502 Deering Commons mixed use development on Stevens Avenue in Portland.
PORTLAND — Yarmouth’s Ice it! Bakery and Cafe has opened a second location in a new 502 Deering Center mixed-use building at 502 Stevens Ave.
502 Deering Center, a three-story 9,643-square-foot mixed-use building that includes three commercial spaces, six apartments and a pocket park, was built last year and opened this year. The building is owned by Denis Lachman and Kiya Smith, of Portland.
Ice It! is in 723 square feet in one of the two street-front commercial units in the building. Darby Jones, a fashion accessory store, will open soon in the other street-facing commercial unit, which is 560 square feet. Honor Movement yoga studio is in the rear unit.
A pocket park onsite has bicycle parking and encourages walkability, the owners said in a zoning request to the city last year regarding parking. The site has 10 on-site spaces and two off-site for the apartments.
The original Ice It! bakery was founded in 2012 and is at 305 U.S. Route 1 in Yarmouth. Owner Alan Fried, a chef, and his wife, Sharon Kuhrt, sell cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies and cakes, particularly wedding and birthday cakes.
The new Portland Ice It! location has the same items, but will also have breakfast sandwiches and a toast bar featuring spreads and toppings. Coming soon is an expanded lunch menu will also include hand pies, salads and power bowls.
The bakery got support with a loan from the Portland Economic Development Corp., the city’s lending arm, the owners said.
Mayor Ethan Strimling, who attended the bakery’s May 4 ribbon-cutting, said the city is happy to support a business that is creating jobs in the community.
“We love being a part of this neighborhood,” Fried said. “502 Deering Center offers the best of village living and urban city — the same qualities that made the neighborhood desirable for 150 years. We envision Ice It! as a gathering place and like any good neighbor, we’re here to contribute to building a happy and thriving place.”
