IDEXX Laboratories Inc. broke ground last week on its planned, $62 million expansion at One IDEXX Drive in Westbrook.

The Synergy East facility, expected to open in late 2019, features a new multi-level, 135,000-square-foot expansion to the existing Synergy Center, which opened in 2014. Friday’s groundbreaking was attended by Gov. Paul LePage and House Speaker Sara Gideon, D-Freeport, among others.

“It’s so rewarding to see a company take off like IDEXX has. They are such an important institution to the state of Maine,” LePage said. “By building these facilities and the laboratories … we are attracting younger people from across the country to come to Maine, and that is the future of Maine.”

Jonathan Ayers, IDEXX CEO since 2002, thanked the project’s supporters to date and employee community, remarking, “The groundbreaking of our Synergy East expansion is significant and is part of a long track record of investing billions of dollars over the last decade in Maine and in Westbrook.”

The new facility, which will have capacity for 600 workers, will be LEED Gold Certified and contain many energy efficient design elements, such as solar panels, highly efficient HVAC and rainwater harvesting. Features include a 200-person conference room and best-in-class office and workstation design.

IDEXX’s workspaces are designed with the idea that social connectedness fosters innovation and productivity, and include many open spaces and collaborative work areas, among other features. Opportunities for connecting are built into the new Synergy East design, in the same vein as the Synergy Center format and other workspaces across IDEXX’s global footprint.
