HealthInfoNet’s board of directors announced Thursday that Shaun Alfreds is the Portland-based nonprofit’s new CEO and executive director.

Alfreds, who had served as acting CEO since last November, was unanimously approved by the board at its May 16 meeting.

“Over the past six months Shaun implemented significant changes at the organization and has a solid plan to bring growth and innovation to HealthInfoNet,” Nona Boyink, who serves as HealthInfoNet’s board chair, said in a news release.

HealthInfoNet is an independent, nonprofit organization using information technology to improve patient care quality and safety. The organization manages Maine’s statewide health information exchange and offers services to encourage health information technology adoption and support new and emerging models of care and care management.

HealthInfoNet is connected to all hospitals in Maine, manages data on 98% of the state’s residents and offers analytics and reporting tools to improve the quality and safety of health care in Maine.

Boyink said the board will be working with Alfreds and his team to develop a three-year strategic plan that aims “to improve the technical infrastructure, build programmatic capacity and quality improvement while keeping a keen eye to new business development opportunities that will help the organization continue to be a national leader in the Health IT space.”

Alfreds has been with HealthInfoNet since 2010, serving as chief operating officer until former CEO Dev Culver’s retirement in November. He has operational health information exchange (HIE) and development experience in the areas of information technology operations, contract negotiation, public sector innovation and finance along with over 15 years of industry experience.

“I am excited to take on this position permanently and have many ideas on how we can expand our role as trusted partners to health care providers across Maine and beyond,” said Alfreds. “I am grateful to the board for providing me the opportunity to lead HealthInfoNet in accomplishing its mission in advancing the innovative use of technology and data to support improved patient outcomes and health reform.”
