Mike's Runway Diner opened this month at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport terminal. The terminal was expanded in 2013, making more room for a restaurant.

AUBURN — A new restaurant at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport has replaced Backwoods BBQ & Grill, which recently closed.

Fans of Backwoods, though, may find some of the fare familiar. Mike Greenlaw, whose with his wife, Heather, owns the new restaurant, Mike's Runway Diner, was the cook for Backwoods. The Greenlaws, of Litchfield, have revamped the menu to provide more comfort food.

Mike's Runway Diner and the airport signed a lease on Aug. 1, and the restaurant will have a grand opening from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, said Rick Lanman, the airport manager.

The restaurant is in 1,185 square feet of space and seats 29 in the 7,000-square-foot terminal, which was expanded in 2103.

Backwoods intown Auburn location has also closed.

Lanman said it's important to have a restaurant at the airport, so he's glad the space filled up quickly after Backwoods closed.

"With the airport being separated from the business districts, the restaurant provides support to many of the nearby businesses and, of course, to users of the airport," he said. "Serving breakfast and lunch every day lets folks get a good lunch at a reasonable price with some great views of the aircraft that are always coming a going at the airport."

Backwoods BBQ had been at the airport since summer 2016, replacing another restaurant, Cavu Cafe, which opened in 2015. Before the terminal expansion, the Landing Strip Cafe was in 800 square feet of space.
