2019 health plan calculator posted online ahead of Nov. 1 ACA enrollment

The Maine Bureau of Insurance has posted an online health plan calculator so that consumers can begin comparison-shopping ahead of open enrollment, Maine Public reported on its website.

Open enrollment is set to begin on Nov. 1, with average premiums ranging from a 2% decrease to a 4% increase, according to the online report by the public radio network.

It also notes that Anthem has returned to the Affordable Care Act marketplace in Maine for 2019.

The 2019 calculator aims to make it easy for individuals to determine the estimated rate for each of the available plans — both on and off the marketplace — based on the person's age, county and smoking status.

But the bureau calls attention to the fact that not all plans are available in every county; that catastrophic plans are only available for people age 30 and younger, or for people who qualify for a hardship or affordability exemption; and that the family deductible and the out-of-pocket maximum for a family is twice the maximum for an individual. The amount is capped at $15,800 per family for 2019.

In a separate section on its website, the Maine Bureau of Insurance lists summary tables of average rate increases in 2019 for individuals and small groups under each insurer.
