Maine ranks No. 3 nationally for allergy-friendly restaurants

Maine’s restaurants rank third in the country for their “friendliness” to patrons with food allergies, according to a recent analysis by dining guide AllergyEats.

The rankings are based on state-specific compilations of the guide’s customer ratings for 850,000 restaurants nationally, AllergyEats said Wednesday in a news release. The ratings reflect how well customers with food allergies or intolerances indicated these conditions were accommodated in each restaurant.

Only Delaware and the District of Columbia outscored Maine, ranking No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the compilation.

New England is the food allergy-friendliest of six regions across the country, according to the restaurant ratings. In addition to Maine’s third-place score, Massachusetts ranks No. 4; Vermont, No. 6; Rhode Island, No. 8; and New Hampshire, No. 10.

The five least allergy-friendly states for dining out are Oklahoma, Kansas, West Virginia, Utah and Texas, according to AllergyEats.

Scoring was based on a five-point scale, with Delaware earning a score of 4.30 and Oklahoma receiving a 3.46.

“The difference between the average food-allergic diner rating of restaurants in New England and the Mid-Atlantic versus the Southwest and West is quite significant,” AllergyEats Founder and CEO Paul Antico said in the release.

“While one can only speculate as to the cause of this difference, there definitely appears to be a greater focus on advocacy, restaurant training and food allergy restaurant laws in the Eastern U.S.”
