New hires

Casco Bay Wealth Advisors in Brunswick hired Katie Lewis as a client services manager. Lewis was previously manager of customer service at Hannaford.

Diversified Communications, an international media company in Portland, hired Samantha Johnson as a marketing administrative assistant. Johnson was previously employed by the Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vt.

The Connectivity Group, a design/build technology infrastructure and integration company in Falmouth, hired Cody Smith as warehouse/deployment technician. Smith was previously with Hannaford.

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor hired Henry Lin as a team member at Northern Light Surgery. Lin specializes in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust hired Jennifer Mazurek as senior vice president, retail banking operations and treasury support manager in Rockland. Previously, Mazurek was senior vice president, director of audit and compliance at Camden National Bank.

Fluid Imaging Technologies Inc., a biotechnology company in Scarborough, hired Michelle Richards as the Buyer supporting production.

Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park hired Catherine Schmitt as science communication specialist. Schmitt previously directed communications for the Maine Sea Grant College Program at the University of Maine.

OTELCO Inc., a telecommunications provider New Gloucester, hired Tracy Peters as director of sales. Peters has 18 years of experience in various sales and sales management roles.

Northeast Bank in Portland hired Dana Curtis as mortgage sales manager. Curtis was previously mortgage loan officer at University Credit Union in Portland.

Clark Insurance in Portland hired Jena Henry as an account analysist in its business insurance department. Henry previously worked at MEMIC as a claim specialist.

Scott Simons Architects in Portland hired Philip Chaney after a year-long sabbatical with Nelson Metal Fabrication focusing on light house restoration. Chaney specializes in projects that enrich the user's experience and enhances the building's relationship to its context and community.

Maine Valuation Co., an independent real estate appraisal firm in Gorham, hired Marc Gowdy as a partner. Gowdy has been appraising real estate in Maine and New Hampshire for 35 years.

The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society board of directors hired Katie Lisnik as executive director. Lisnik was previously the director of companion animal public policy at the Humane Society of the United States.

Promotions

U.S. Cellular promoted Bruce Mitton to sales manager in Topsham. Mitton was previously a retail wireless consultant in Augusta.

Lee Auto Malls in Auburn announced that William Menke became an equity partner in the auto dealer group. Menke serves as general manager for the company.

F.L.Putnam Investment Management Co. in Portland promoted Glen Martin to vice president, private client advisor and Scott Mazuzan to vice president, private client advisor and director of communication and engagement. Martin and Mazuzan were previously private client advisors.

Scott Simons Architects in Portland promoted Seth Wilschutz to associate. Wilschutz has been with the firm since October 2017.

The Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership in Augusta promoted Larry Robinson to president. Robinson has served as the partnership's center director since 2012.

Appointments

College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor added Cynthia Baker, Sarah Currie-Halpern and Laura McGiffert Slover to its board of trustees. Baker is a senior development director at Duke University, Currie-Halpern is co-founder of the waste reduction and diversion consulting firm Think Zero LLC and Slover is president and CEO of CenterPoint Education Solutions.

Todd Mason, president/CEO of the Maine Credit Union League, was appointed to the Maine State Chamber of Commerce board of directors for a three-year term.

Achievements

The Finance Authority of Maine recognized Camden National Bank, for lenders with over $1.5 billion in assets, and Androscoggin Bank, for lenders with less than $1.5 billion in assets, with its “Lender at Work for Maine” awards at its annual Showcase Maine event in Portland.

Verizon Business listed the city of Portland as the top city in the U.S. in its “Best Small Cities to Start a Small Business Report.”

Skelton Taintor & Abbott shareholder Sarah Mitchell was a featured speaker at the National Business Institute Divorce Law Boot Camp held at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland.

Kaplan Thompson Architects in Portland said it was the only Maine firm on ARCHITECT magazine's “Top-50 Firms in Sustainability List.”

The city of South Portland Economic Development Committee recently presented its annual awards. South Portland House of Pizza was named the “Small Business of the Year Award (25 or fewer employees)” winner; SoPoCo.Works was the recipient of the “New Business of the Year Award;” South Portland Veterinary Hospital won the “Santo 'Sam' DiPietro Community Impact Award;” Don Foshay Jr. of Don Foshay's Discount Tire & Alignment was the recipient of the “Business Leader of the Year Award;” Texas Instruments Inc. was selected as the “Business of the Year Award (greater than 25 employees)” winner; Mayor Linda Cohen was presented with a Face of South Portland Award;” and Bob O'Brien of Noyes, Allen, & Hall Insurance was recognized for his longtime service to the city's Economic Development Committee.

Androscoggin Home Healthcare and Hospice in Lewiston announced that its volunteer program received level 3 certification from We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veteran Affairs. The organization also presented Tripp Lake Camp with its “Heart of Hospice Award” for going above and beyond for hospice patients and their families.

The city of Portland and the Portland Development Corp. selected Avesta Housing as its “2018 Economic Development Achievement Award” winner during its annual business awards ceremony. Tilson Technology Management received the “2018 Business of the Year Award,” Harbor Fish Market the “2018 Small Business of the Year Award” and Gorgeous Gelato the “2018 PDC Client of the Year Award.”

RE/MAXShoreline in Portland said Richie Garrett was named the No. 2 Individual RE/MAX Agent in Maine and the No. 14 Individual RE/MAX Agent in New England in October. The firm also announced Tom Ranello earned the “RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award” for $1 million in commissions.

Gov. Paul R. LePage and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection announced the recipients of the “2018 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence.” MoInlycke in Wiscasset won the “Sustainability Award,” the Maine State Prison in Warren received the “Stewardship Award” and Inland Technologies International in South Portland received the “Innovation Award.”

Vicki Losick, a scientist at MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, was named the inaugural recipient of an award from the William Procter Scientific Innovation Fund, which will support her research on age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older people. The fund provides up to $50,000 annually to support high risk/high impact research, basic research with potential for commercialization and education programs focused on translating discoveries into commercial applications.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Portland, said six of its attorneys were included in the 2018 “New England Super Lawyers” list and another four were named “Rising Stars” in the publication.

Day One, an agency in South Portland dedicated to addressing substance use and mental health needs among children and young adults, named Dianne Nason its “2018 Visionary Leadership Award” winner and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine its “2018 Impact Award” recipient at its 45th Annual Celebration. Nason is regional trust director, senior vice president at Key Private Bank.

Kathryn Will-Dubyak, University of Maine at Farmington literacy education professor, was named a “2018 Bonnie Campbell Hill National Literacy Leader Award” winner by the Children's Literature Assembly at the National Council of Teacher Educators national conference in Houston, Texas. The university also said its educator preparation program received national accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the first institution in the state of Maine to meet the new, rigorous national accreditation standards. In addition, the school received full approval for state accreditation, including several commendations, from the Maine State Board of Education and was named one of the most affordable LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges and Universities by Student Loan Hero, an online resource to help students live their best financial life.

Deb Nelson, an integrative nutrition health coach in Yarmouth, published her first book, Finding Health After Cancer: Stories of Renewal and Healing. The book shares information about the different paths to health of 23 people who received a cancer diagnosis.

John Diamond, president and executive director of the University of Maine Alumni Association in Orono, was selected as the 2018 recipient of the “Marvin D. 'Swede' Johnson Achievement Award” at the annual Higher Education Government Relations Conference in Atlanta, Ga. The award is given annually for leadership in state relations and institutional advocacy, a field that encompasses advocacy and outreach efforts on behalf of colleges and universities to governors, state legislators and other key policymakers and influencers.
