A company calling itself "Sea Weed" received unanimous approval Wednesday night from South Portland's Planning Board to build an adult recreational marijuana retail store near the Maine Mall.

WGME Channel 13 reported that the board approved the proposed 3,200-square-foot facility with eight conditions, including that the business obtains a state license and provides a plaque for a possible ancient burial ground near the undeveloped site at 185 Running Hill Road.

"We came to South Portland because they were forward-thinking and were the first town or city to come up with ordinances," Scott Howard of Sea Weed said, as reported by WGME. "They were great to work with. We've been working on this plan for a while and we have a great product."

According to the planning board's agenda that's available on the city's website, Sea Suites Development LLC plans to build the adult recreational marijuana retail store on a 4.34 acre site with an existing curb cut and driveway from Running Hill Road.
