$3M water upgrades planned for York County

The Maine Water Company in Biddeford is planning to spend nearly $3 million this year to improve aging drinking water infrastructure in southern Maine.

The company’s plans will help prepare Northern York County for “solid economic growth in the next few years,” Maine Water President Judy Wallingford said in today’s announcement. She added that the upgrades will provide the area with dependable water in the next few decades.

The nearly $3 million in investments will be divided into separate projects: $1.2 million for a water main upgrade, $850,000 for a new pump station and $700,000 to upgrade a water treatment plant’s chemical handling process, all in Biddeford. There’s also a plan to upgrade distribution systems in Old Orchard Beach for an undisclosed price.

The projects by Maine Water, which serves 32,000 customers in more than 20 communities, were determined after a $140,000 study identified the southern Maine region’s infrastructure priorities.
