40 CMP workers laid off

Forty Central Maine Power Co. employees are being laid off, the utility's parent company announced Friday.

Iberdrola USA is laying off 140 employees in the Northeast, including 40 nonunion CMP employees, according to the Associated Press. Iberdrola spokesman Clayton Ellis attributed the layoffs to the current economic climate and said the layoffs were "an effort to better align the company's operations with current business needs." The Maine Department of Labor is working to set up a rapid response session for the employees, according to news channel WCSH 6.

Spain-based Iberdrola bought Energy East, parent company of CMP, in September 2008 and renamed it Energy East Iberdrola USA.
