40 Under 40: An affordable housing advocate for Maine

Photo / Tim Greenway Ryan Fecteau, Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, hopes to visit all 50 state capitals one day.

Significant professional accomplishment: Passing legislation to make housing more affordable and expand access to housing by reforming zoning and land use laws and making the single-largest investment in housing construction in state history.

Passion project: Recently I made the effort to research my ancestry on my dad’s side. I was able to track my family back to the first and only Fecteau to emigrate to New France, Canada. I’ll be visiting France in October where I’ll visit the birthplace of this distant grandfather, Pierre Filteau.

Audacious goal: Visit all 50 state capitals.

Favorite quote: “We spend so much time being afraid of failure, afraid of rejection. But regret is the thing we should fear most. Failure is an answer. Rejection is an answer. Regret is an eternal question you will never have the answer to.” — Trevor Noah

Influential book: “The Political Mind,” by George Lakoff, and “Find Me,” by André Aciman

Favorite movies/TV shows: I am an unapologetic “Survivor” fanatic. Recently I cannot say enough good things about “The Bear.” One of my favorite movies is “Milk.” It introduced me to Harvey Milk. Prior to the film, I did not know of any LGBTQ leaders or historical figures.

How do you recharge: By playing tennis, kayaking, traveling, enjoying good food and drink, visiting Biddeford’s beaches, meeting up with friends, watching football and spending time with my partner and our two doodles, Pancake and Jax.
