About 77,000 Mainers could get ACA tax credits

Some 60% of qualified Maine residents could get tax credits next year to make Affordable Care Act health coverage affordable.

Those Mainers are among the 122,000 state residents who potentially could shop for health insurance on the new online marketplaces, the Bangor Daily News reported, quoting a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis.

The tax credits represent one type of federal assistance residents can get through the marketplaces. They offset some of the monthly premium cost. There also are subsidies available to lower deductible, co-payment and other out-of-pocket costs. The financial help depends on family size and income.

The marketplaces were launched on Oct. 1, but technical issues on the federal www.healthcare.gov website have discouraged many consumers from getting the insurance.
