Apple ladder maker destroyed by fire

A fire Tuesday night destroyed an apple ladder manufacturer in Brooks. The cause of the fire is undetermined due to the extensive damage.

Peter Baldwin, owner of Baldwin Apple Ladders, told the Bangor Daily News the fire destroyed a year's worth of inventory of ladders and his equipment. He told investigators from the fire marshal's office that he had some electrical problems earlier that evening. Baldwin ran the business for 23 years and said he wasn't sure if he would resume the business to its previous capacity. The business was partially insured.

The company produced between 1,000 and 1,200 apple ladders a year and sold them to orchards in states from Wisconsin to North Carolina.
