Auburn jail may outsource meals

The Androscoggin County Jail may outsource meal preparation at the facility that normally houses around 150 inmates.

The Sun Journal reported that Androscoggin County Sheriff Guy Desjardins said the consideration comes in response to pending budget cuts from the state.

Outsourcing meal service would cut three positions at the jail while saving $45,000 that Desjardins said he could use to hire another corrections officer.

The paper reported that food services giant Aramark, based in Pennsylvania, has entered a bid to serve the jail at a per meal price of $2.11 when the average jail population is between 148 and 163 inmates.

Aramark currently provides the same service for York and Kennebec county jails as well as Two Bridges Regional Jail, which serves Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties.

The paper reported that a decision on whether to outsource the food service would likely take months for county officials.
