Auto parts mfg. plans temporary shut down

An auto parts manufacturer in Brewer is closing down for two weeks, citing the national slowdown in the auto industry.

Brewer Automotive Components will shut down for two weeks starting Dec. 19, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company makes suspension and steering components for Toyota of North America and other automobile companies, and employs 117 people. Mike Seile, the company's vice president, told the paper the shutdown is not directly related to the federal bailout of the Big Three automakers, but due to "consumers not buying vehicles because of the financial crisis." Toyota of North America's demand for parts is down as the company reduces its vehicle inventory in the face of November sales that dropped 34% over the same month last year, according to the paper.

Brewer Automotive Components still expects its sales to be $46 million in 2008, a $9 million increase over 2007.
