Bates Mill demo delayed, parking OK'ed

Lewiston city councilors have voted to build a $5 million parking garage near Bates Mill No. 5 even as they spared the building from demolition.

The city will construct the 378-space parking garage as part of a 2004 agreement with developer Tom Platz, who owns other properties in the mill complex, according to the Sun Journal. The agreement requires the city to provide more than 1,000 parking spaces in the downtown by 2011, a deal it's running behind on fulfilling.

Councilors also voted last night to save the mill from the wrecking ball as they sort out legal and ownership issues and eye better federal tax incentives for the historic property. Demolition had been scheduled to begin next week, the paper reported.

Further complicating the future of the site is Great Falls Recreation and Redevelopment LLC's plan to build a casino on the property. The group has proposed paying the city $150,000 as an option to buy the land under Bates Mill No. 5, and councilors last month agreed to put the issue to a citywide vote.
