Bill to increase minimum wage on shaky ground

A proposal to raise Maine’s minimum wage has been approved by the House of Representatives, but it’s unclear if the bill will gain any more traction.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the amended version of L.D. 92 would incrementally increase the minimum wage, going from the state’s current rate of $7.50 an hour to $8 this October, then increasing 50 cents every year until reaching $9.50 in 2018.

The bill was supported by the Democrat-led House, but it’s unlikely to survive in the Republican-led Senate, the newspaper noted. Gov. Paul LePage would likely veto the bill, after previously stating his opposition to raise the minimum wage and vowing to veto Democrats’ bills.
