BIW lays off another 58

Bath Iron Works has announced its second round of layoffs this week due to a gap in work.

BIW today temporarily laid off 58 preservation technicians, which includes painters, according to the Associated Press. On Monday, the shipyard laid off 67 workers just hours after President Jeff Geiger warned of more in the coming four to six months as the shipyard prepares for a workload gap created as it transitions to work on the next generation of Navy destroyers.

Once construction on the first DDG 1000 destroyer ramps up this fall, there will be a sustained workload for several years, Geiger said in a memo released Monday.
