BIW union officers barred from elections

Two former elected officers at Bath Iron Works' largest union have been barred by their parent organization from running for office.

The decision by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers follows an internal trial of four local officers who were suspended when Local S6 was placed in trusteeship in March 2008 -- President Mike Keenan, chief Bath steward Mike Cyr, trustee Cathy London and former Vice President Troy Osgood. Keenan and Cyr were barred from holding office for four and two years, respectively, according to the Associated Press. Osgood's punishment is still unclear and London was exonerated, reported the AP. The union is expected to hold elections within a few months.

The IAMAW suspended the officers on charges of financial mismanagement and viewing pornography on union-owned computers. The four officers are suing the parent union for damages in Superior Court in Maine.
