Boothbay Harbor ER closure pushed back

Lincoln County Healthcare will push back its plans to close the emergency room at its St. Andrews Hospital and Health Care Center in Boothbay Harbor, according to the Bangor Daily News.

In August, the health care group announced plans to close its emergency room and in-patient services unit at St. Andrews in April 2013, a move that would involve transforming the facility into an urgent-care center with daytime hours.

The move aims to stem the loss of money, which the hospital has seen in nine of the last 11 years along with a 10% drop in outpatient visits.

The BDN reported that the move has been postponed until October 2013 to better align with local budgeting processes in the Boothbay area.

Local leaders say the closure of St. Andrews as a hospital will require the expansion of ambulance service to transport emergency patients to Damariscotta's Miles Memorial Hospital, which is 18 miles away.
