Border commission to award $1.25M

The Northern Border Regional Commission plans to dole out $1.25 million for economic development in the border regions of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.

Beginning Aug. 1, the commission -- made up of federal appointees and officials from the four states -- will accept applications for projects related to infrastructure development, job skills and employment education, and health care and other public services, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. The deadline is Aug. 29, and the commission will announce award winners by Sept. 30. Interested applicants should contact their local economic development districts to get more information.

Legislation sponsored by Michaud led to the creation of the commission, which focuses on developing economically distressed areas along the Eastern North Woods. Last year, it awarded seven grants, totaling $1.3 million, including $250,000 for an expansion of the Port of Eastport.
