Building owner pleads guilty to civil charge

The owner of a Brunswick building destroyed by fire in April has pleaded guilty to a civil public safety charge.

Orville Ranger last week pleaded guilty for failing to have more than one exit in the building, which carries a $500 fine, The Forecaster reported. A second criminal charge of violating a public fire safety rule that the building have a smoke detector system was dropped. He previously pleaded not guilty at an August arraignment.

Ranger's three-story building in downtown Brunswick burned, displacing 17 residents and five businesses, and the remnants were later demolished. The official cause of the fire was undetermined, although investigators believe it was caused by an electrical malfunction. Ranger was summonsed in June.
