Calais nursing home likely to close
A nursing home in Calais appears slated to close, putting 100 people out of work and displacing its 18 residents. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services on Friday affirmed the certificate of need to close the facility and open a new one in Ellsworth, the Bangor Daily News reported.
First Atlantic Healthcare last fall submitted the certificate of need to close Atlantic Rehabiliation and Nursing Center in Calais due to dwindling revenues, and the city earlier this year asked DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew to review the decision. Mayhew on Friday agreed that keeping the nursing home open "would not be economically feasible." The decision could be appealed to Maine Superior Court, though no one has indicated a desire to appeal it.
First Atlantic CEO Kenneth Bowden told the paper the company is still devising a closure plan, and it's unclear when it will shut its doors for good. The facility is the only licensed skilled-care nursing home in Calais, and other facilities in Washington County are at capacity, according to the paper.
