Call center shutters, lays off 120 workers

A call center in Eliot closed yesterday, leaving about 120 workers jobless.

Managers at CenterPoint informed employees the company would close immediately and called in two police officers before breaking the news, according to news channel WGME 13. In explaining that decision, President and CEO Michael McNaboe said with "that number of people at the same time hearing the bad news, [it was] just a smart thing to do." No incidents were reported, and one employee said the news was not a surprise, since managers had been absent all week and her paycheck had bounced earlier this year. McNaboe attributed the closure to the poor economy.

While CenterPoint, which handles customer calls from national retailers, launched March 2008, various call centers have operated out of the location for 11 years. The call center in December laid off 60 employees, at which time McNaboe said the company planned to "restore the business to profitability and then expand."
