Camden requests stipulations on Route 1 reconstruction

Camden’s Route 1 North Advisory Committee has requested stipulations to the Maine Department of Transportation’s plan to rebuild a 1.54-mile stretch of Route 1 north of Camden.

The PenBay Pilot reported MDOT’s project is four years in the making. In a July 1 memo to the Camden Select Board, the committee wrote that MDOT has been unwilling “to consider the impact of the entire plan on the town of Camden.” The rebuild includes major repairs to the state arterial highway and two bridges. The project was expected to begin in 2017, but has been delayed. The stretch of highway passes through Camden residential and mixed-use zones.

According to the “MDOT Work Plan Calendar Years 2018-2019-2020,” issued in January 2018 work in Camden includes:

  • Highway construction/rehabilitation of Route 1 beginning 0.56 of a mile north of Sagamore Farm Road and extending north 1.54 miles; $5.53 million
  • Highway safety and spot drainage improvements along Route 1;$321,000
  • Highway safety and slope stabilization on Route 1; $75,000
  • Camden, Lincolnville, Northport Route 1 paving beginning 0.30 of a mile south of Lincolnville town line and extending north 5.44 miles; $198,992
  • Spring Brook Bridge replacement on Route 1, located 0.94 of a mile southwest of the Lincolnville town line; $2.5 million
  • Great Brook Bridge replacement on Route 1, located 0.05 of a mile south of Dyer Drive; $700,000
  • Belfast-Camden bicycle-pedestrian trail along Route 1, Route 52, Chestnut Street, Bayview Street and Mechanic Street; $614,143
  • Bicycle-pedestrian trail along Route 105; $382,500
  • Camden, Rockport bicycle-pedestrian trail along Route 1, beginning at Quarry Hill Road in Camden and extending south 0.36 of a mile; $606,000

According to the minutes of the Camden Board of Selectmen’s May 2018 meeting, board Chairman Robert Falciani noted that a “disappointing turnout” from abutters to review the plan was cause for concern, with the project likely to be “substantially disruptive for a period of time.”

Camden has been a popular tourist destination for years, with Route 1, running through the downtown, often clogged with traffic during the summer, although comments on TripAdvisor  note that it simply means slowing down and going with the flow.
