Central Maine ice arena to open June 1

A new ice rink under construction in Hallowell to replace one that collapsed last year is set to open in June. Construction on the rink began more than two months ago.

Workers at the new $4 million Bank of Maine Ice Vault recently poured concrete over refrigerant pipes, a necessary step before the ice can be put it, according to the Kennebec Journal. Preferred Mechanical Services and Blane Casey Building Contractor are doing the work at the rink. Arena Manager KC Johnson said the arena is on track to open June 1, and that it's working with the Skating Association of Maine to organize summer skating and hockey camp programs.

In March 2011, the 38-year-old Kennebec Ice Arena collapsed under the weight of snow on its roof. The Bank of Maine helped pay for the new arena and secured naming rights.
