Civic center eyeing professional lacrosse tenant

The Cumberland County Civic Center is negotiating a deal to host a professional lacrosse team called the Maine Moose Trax starting next fall.

The Portland Press Herald reported the team is the first franchise for a new national lacrosse league. It is the first new tenant announced since lease negotiations with the Portland Pirates hockey team broke down earlier this year.

The Maine lacrosse team is owned by a local investment group led by Maine native Joshua Plowman, the paper reported. The league intends to have teams throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic in 2014, but has not yet revealed how many teams will play in the first season. The paper reported each team will play six home games and six away games.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the state of a deal between the civic center trustees and Maine Moose Trax.
