Coast of Maine Organic Products merges, will expand in Mid-Atlantic

Photo / Tim Greenway Carlos Quijano started Coast of Maine Organic Products in 1996, turning waste into soil that could be sold through gardening stores and retailers like Whole Foods. The company reported it has merged with Frey Brothers Inc. of Quarryville, Pa.

Coast of Maine Organic Products of Portland and Frey Brothers Inc., a farm-product supplier based in Quarryville, Pa., said they have merged.

Both are established manufacturers of soils and mulches supplying to over 2,000 retail outlets across New England and the Mid Atlantic. Each will be led by existing management teams, supported by an investment from Gemini Investors, according to a statement from the companies.

The merger will expand Coast of Maine’s reach into the Mid-Atlantic.

Coast of Maine founder Carlos Quijano told Mainebiz last August that he was looking at potential acquisitions and other options to become more of a regional business.

Right now, our primary markets are from Marion Township to the Hudson River: Greater Boston, Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley. We sell to two Whole Foods distributors, one in Connecticut and one in Landover, Md.,” Quijano said at the time. “Part of our strategic plan is to open a manufacturing plant in the Mid-Atlantic.”

He established the company in 1996. It produces organic garden soils and fertilizers using compost-based soils with ocean- and farm-sourced inputs. It also produces a line of own-brand soils for Master Nursery Garden Centers in the East, a national buying co-op bringing together many of the nation’s prominent independent garden centers.
