Commission seeks charter school applications
The state has issued a request-for-proposals for groups looking to open charter schools in Maine, with a goal of approving applications in time for the beginning of the school year in the fall. A law allowing charter schools in Maine was passed last June.
Operators must be nonprofit, non-religious groups and submit letters of intent to apply by May 16, according to MaineToday Media. Full applications are due June 29. The Maine Charter School Commission will decide on applications within 90 days of receipt, and a charter contract must be in place 60 days before the school can open. Applicants must show how their program will benefit the community and potential students, and provide details on finances, curriculum and recruitment. Up to 10 charter schools can be opened in the first 10 years the law is in place.
Charter schools are public institutions that are free to students, but can operate more independently than other public schools.
