Committee OKs $10M for wind research

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $10 million for the University of Maine's offshore wind research, but the funding has yet to be included in the House version of the bill.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the committee, announced yesterday the committee approved her request for the funding, which would help fund UMaine's Deepwater Offshore Wind Initiative, according to a press release. The $10 million is half of what the energy department promised following U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu's visit to UMaine in June. However, similar legislation pending in the House does not include funding for the project. Last October, the energy department chose UMaine as one of three universities in the country to receive up to $8 million to fund its offshore wind test center off Monhegan Island, one of three state-selected test sites. UMaine is planning to design and deploy two 10-kilowatt and one 100-kW floating turbine prototypes.

The full Senate still must approve the appropriations bill, according to the release.
